PRESIDENTIAL LETTER TO MEMBERSHIP

Dear IIBA Member:

This letter is to bring you up to date on the changes happening administratively in the Institute, inform you of events that have happened and those events that are coming, International Faculty news, and to urge you to make a rapid response to dues requests for next year.

Administrative Changes

Our Executive Director, John Bustelos, has submitted his resignation as of June 1 and he left at the end of June. His leaving also means that our office infrastructure is changing. Along with John Bustelos, Toni Krysinski also left her position at IIBA as Office Administrator, this will require filling this position. Trustee Anita Madden will be spending 1-2 days a week in the office to help structure a smooth transition and we are all grateful for her help.

International Conference: Belgirate, Italy

253 persons enjoyed this conference set on scenic Lago Maggiore in northern Italy. "Continuing the Dialogue: From Infancy to Adulthood" was the theme addressed by a number of speakers including Daniel Stern, Robert Hilton, Phil Helfaer, Guy Tonella, Peter Schindler, Christa Ventling, Umberto Galimberti; Vezio Ruggeri , Miretta Prezza and others in panels. Workshops were held in the afternoons, as were "affinity groups", which were composed of people with similar interests or involvement such as trainers, CBTs, students, trustees. Affinity groups were used for the first time to provide continuity through the conference for each person and proved very popular. There were pre and post conference workshops, and a one-day seminar at the University of Milan preceding the conference, which featured Daniel Stern, David Campbell and Gabriela Buti-Zaccagnini. Attendees please send or email your evaluations.

Next Conference: October 2003, Brazil

Gate is open

At its May meeting the Board of Trustees approved the "International Faculty Requirements and Guidelines" which effectively opens the gate to becoming a part of the faculty to all qualified candidates and represents a more open process of being considered. The current Faculty selection committee is composed of Gabriella Buti Zaccagnini, Robert Coffman and Anna Miller.

Welcome to New IIBA Faculty

Congratulations to new faculty selected this year: John Conger, Vincentia Schroeter, Odila Weigand, Liane Zink. John and Vincentia are from the United States and Odila and Liane are from Brazil.

Other Faculty news

The Teaching Committee recommended and the Board of Trustees adopted new standards for training, "Rights and Responsibilities for International Faculty, Local Faculty, Societies and Students". This document as with all others will be sent to Society Directors and Federation Presidents as soon as translations are completed.

Professional Development Workshop

You should have received a flier announcing a professional development workshop for CBTs and 4th and 5th year trainees. It is intended to be a part of postgraduate education and a 'new' form of professional development which combines the best of our traditional leadership training and links it with the best of recent professional training themes. It will be held in Charleston, South Carolina U.S.A., October 18-21, 2001. It is limited to 40 people so make your interest known right away. The theme is "Your Therapeutic Relationships" and the faculty will be Jane Ahlfeld, David Campbell, Louise Frechette, and Bennett Shapiro.

Financial Status

We are at a low point in our financial resources since our income has not kept pace with our expenses. Since our reorganization we have expended more money in making the transition to a democratic form of organization, had more expenses in such things as staff costs conference calls as well as moving the office and other expenses. It is clear that activating our new structure has been costly. Even though our office expenses have been dropping the last few years, we must spend even less from here on. Also, throughout our history Alexander Lowen has generously contributed much of the income from workshops, which he conducted, and that is no longer available to the Institute since his retirement. We have also noted that over the past 10 years our societies have tended to decrease membership rather than increase them and a large number of members either have not paid their dues or pay them late. As it now stands, as of June 30 we have $21,000.00 to sustain our administration until September when dues are expected to start coming in. You may view a summary of income, expenses, assets and liabilities as well as a four-year comparison included.

Dues Statements Enclosed

The Board of Trustees urges those who have not paid dues for this past year to please do so now, and to pay next years dues as soon as possible. The Board of Trustees would very much appreciate your help to find new resources and enthusiasm so that more training groups are created, more international workshops offered and new members are welcomed. Dr. Lowen was honored this past year by the U.S. Association of Body Psychotherapy with a life time achievement award which illustrates the fact that bioenergetics is foundational for those who are committed to body psychotherapy. Let us keep the Institute's work as vital and vibrant as our founder has done.

Sincerely,

Bill White
IIBA President
