NEWSLETTER                                                           DECEMBER 2001

THANK YOU

A sincere thanks is extended to all who have given their time and talent in translating documents for us in IIBA, not only the Newsletter but also many papers for the Faculty, Board and members.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

All of us have been impacted by the horror of terrorism and its disregard of human life and dignity, tearing at the very fabric of civilization.  The entire world was exposed through the television coverage of the New York World Trade Center and Pentagon bombings of how tenuous is the thread between life and death.  If anything, these recent current events can serve to challenge us to face the very hard and complex aspects of our human condition, including the dark side, deepen our commitment to be generous with our love and rededicate to affirm and be grounded in the values of our shared humanity,

Note of appreciation:  Thank you to all who contacted us to express your care and support.

OFFICE MATTERS:  GETTING GROUNDED

The office continues to be managed very capably by Trustee Anita Madden and her daughter Pam Bell, who is a trained accountant.  These two have volunteered their time and effort for the sake of our ongoing office needs that have been necessitated since the departure of our executive director. We all owe them a debt of gratitude.  Their efforts are helping to clarify exactly what we need in our office functions and infrastructure so that we can employ staff to meet those needs directly.  The Trustees recently approved Pam to consult for three months to bring together the various elements needed for an efficient office infrastructure.

OUR OFFICE WILL BE MOVING THIS DECEMBER 15, 2001, AND HOPEFULLY FOR THE LAST TIME.

MONEY MATTERS:  GETTING GROUNDED;  SOUTH AMERICAN CRISIS

We have had to take a hard look at our approach to money and funding since our employment of an executive director proved so costly to us.  We are not bankrupt, though our reserves are depleted, so we must watch our expenses carefully.  We also had to look at money matters prompted by the Latin American Federation’s letter of crisis to the Board of Trustees.  In this letter they expressed the impossibility of students and members in their culture to meet the cost of dues because of the dramatic loss of their currency value against the dollar.  In emergency (email) session the Trustees have voted to adopt the South American declaration that they need to pay 1/3 less for their dues. The Trustees also agreed to ask the finance committee to review this decision to see if it needs to be continued in the future and what other European country’s economies are also affected, taking into consideration the currency valuation.  The Trustees hope that this will serve to express our commitment to be grounded in reality with our membership, including the value of money. Of course, these dues reduction decisions will have some, as yet undetermined, affect on program planning.
